PIGCOUNT is an initiative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) Vertebrate Pest Research Unit in collaboration with Intersect Australia. This project is funded and supported by NSW Local Land Services and the Australian Government’s Supporting Communities Manage Pest Animals and Weeds Program.
One of the challenges for land managers involved in feral pig management is measuring the success or failure of control activities. While counting the number of animals dispatched in a trap is helpful, it is difficult to understand the impact of control efforts on the existing population. Monitoring pig numbers is what distinguishes effective control from efforts with an uncertain outcome. This PIGCOUNT application provides a user-friendly resource for landholders to upload image data collected using camera traps to receive an estimated feral pig population density generated by an automated AI-enabled data processing method. This application, together with a prototype camera trap monitoring method, allows landholders to monitor the feral pig population before and after trapping or baiting on their property.
If you would like to use this application you should:
- Register for an account here: New User Form
- Await a response from the site administrators who will be in contact about setting up your camera traps around your feral pigtrap or baiting device.
- Follow the instructions to upload data here: Existing User Form
- Await the report via email.
